Chapter Ten

What a morning. Finn had left in silence and the kids had already spilled grape juice all over the kitchen.

The doorbell rang. What now?

Wiping purple-stained hands on a dishtowel, Katelyn yanked open the door, prepared to rip into whoever stood there. “Stefanie!” Delighted, Katelyn pulled her friend inside. “What are you doing here?”

“I could ask you the same question. I had to practically shove bamboo under Daniel’s fingernails to find out where you were hiding.” Stefanie glanced around. “This is a charming slice of suburbia, but what are you doing in it?”

Katelyn laughed, delighted with her friend’s candor. “I thought you were the one pushing me in this direction.”

Stefanie pulled her sunglasses down a fraction as she glanced around the typical home. “Did you have to go so middle class, darling?”

Katelyn smiled wryly. “You didn’t specify when you kept pointing out that the hands of my biological clock were spinning.”

“True.” Stefanie glanced again at the suburban home. “I thought that was a given.”

Jenny peeked from around the dining room corner and Katelyn hoped she hadn’t heard Stefanie’s remark. “I love you, Stef, but don’t be a snob.”

“Ah…so that’s how it is.” Stefanie raised one brow. “Tell me, why didn’t I know you’d fallen in love with this man?”

Katelyn glanced again at Jenny. “Later. Right now, I want you to meet Finn’s kids. This one, hovering in the doorway, is Jenny.”

Jenny walked forward reluctantly, staring at Stefanie, who was outfitted in a wild leopard-print suit with matching hat, purse and shoes.

Katelyn looked between the child and her friend and could see why Jenny was intimidated. “Can you say hello to Stefanie?”

“Sure she can,” Stefanie answered for her. “Hey, kid. So, you into Barbie or Barney?”

Katelyn stared at her friend in surprise.

Stefanie shrugged. “I’ve got nieces and nephews coming out of my ears.” She shook her head. “Now that’s quite an image. You learn the lingo or they plow you down like that.” She snapped her fingers. “Right, Jenny?”

Jenny grinned, obviously liking this exotic woman.

“And I bet you know where they keep the coffee,” Stefanie continued, directing her words to Jenny.

“Uh-huh. I’ll show you.”

“And then you could take the twins to the TV room for cartoons,” Katelyn suggested, wanting a few moments alone with her friend.

Jenny looked between them. “Okay. Can we have some candy?”

“Nice try,” Katelyn responded. “Even I know it’s not for breakfast.”

Jenny shrugged philosophically and disappeared.

“Nice save,” Stefanie commented.

“I try.” Katelyn glanced across the kitchen bar at Stefanie who was practically inhaling her coffee. “Would you like some more?”

“At least a gallon.” She yawned. “Or we could just inject the caffeine intravenously. I might wake up sooner.”

Katelyn refilled Stefanie’s mug and pushed it across the counter. Then she picked up a mug of her own, thinking of the disastrous ending to their picnic. A week had gone by and they were still at an impasse. Why in the world had she pushed them into a situation of no return?

“Earth to Katelyn,” she heard her friend say. “Hey! I thought I was the one with the morning grogginess.
